According to traditional Chinese medicine, with the transition into the fall season, not only is the outer environment changing, but also it is believed that the inner environment of our bodies adjusts to these seasonal changes. Every season can bring new challenges to our health, and potentially increasing our susceptibility to disease. During the fall season, the organs that are vulnerable are the lungs and skin.
Recently, I have been very interested in exploring topical herbs and essential oils for skin health and beauty.
One way to incorporate herbs into your skin regimen is by using a facial steam. Facial steams are especially beneficial for sensitive and irritated skin. If your skin is on the drier side, you can use a facial steam and follow up with a moisturizer, such as organic coconut or rosehip oil.

I highly recommend using only pure organic ingredients in your facial steam. You can use medicinal flowers such as rose, lavender, and chamomile. Many other types of flowers are gentle, soothing, and healing to the skin.
I found a facial steam blend from  www.mountainroseherbs.com. The ingredients use organic rose, chamomile, and calendula flowers, and comfrey leaves.
A terrific way to enhance your facial steam experience is to add several drops of your favorite essential oils specific for skin health, such as lavender, rose geranium, or blue chamomile.

(1) Place your dried flowers, herbs, and oil in a large bowl.
(2) Boil filtered spring water and add the boiling water to your herbs.
(3) Bring your bowl of steaming herbs to the table and sit with the bowl in front of you.
(4) Using a towel, cover your head and the entire bowl to contain the steam around your face. This will ensure that you get the full benefits of the volatile components released from the simmering infusion of the medicinal herbs.
(5) Breath deeply and enjoy the pleasant aroma of the steam as it opens your pores and penetrates your skin.

You can do a facial steam several times a month as part of your skin regiment, especially during the fall season.
Enjoy!
